Tintswalo: Sleeping Among the Big Five

We came hoping to see lions. We left with something much more valuable: a collection of family moments we'll never forget.

A Different Kind of Safari

When people think of a South African safari, they often picture Kruger National Park.

We were looking for something different. Something a little quieter. A little more intimate. A little more focused on the experience than on ticking animals off a list.

That's how we found Tintswalo at Welgevonden Game Reserve.

A private reserve where game drives are limited, lodges are small, and wildlife encounters feel surprisingly personal. What we didn't know then was that this lodge would deliver far more than impressive animal sightings.

First Impressions: A Place That Feels Special

Sometimes you arrive somewhere and instantly know you're going to remember it.

After leaving behind a freezing Johannesburg morning, we entered Welgevonden and met Stephen, our guide for the next two days.

Our own adventure had already begun.

The further we drove into the reserve, the more everyday life seemed to disappear behind us. Then we arrived. Tintswalo wasn't just comfortable. It felt magical.

An outdoor shower. A bathtub worthy of Bridgerton. Three terraces overlooking the bush. And perhaps most importantly according to Janne: An all-inclusive minibar with chocolates. Everyone has their priorities.

The Wonder Moment

We weren't watching lions.

We weren't searching for wildlife. We were simply sitting in the bush, drink in hand, with rhinos, warthogs and baboons somewhere in the distance.

No radio calls.

No urgency.

No checklist.

Just being present. That's when we realised the real magic of safari isn't the animals.

It's learning to slow down enough to notice them.

Could Stephen Deliver?

Before our first game drive, Stephen casually mentioned lions, leopards and cheetahs. The problem with such confidence is that it creates expectations. Fortunately, he delivered.

The drive quickly brought us zebras, kudus, rhinos and giraffes. But everyone in the vehicle secretly wanted the same thing. Lions. Eventually Stephen received the radio call every safari guest hopes for.

And there they were. A male lion and two lionesses hiding almost invisibly in the bush.

Our first lion sighting. Worth every kilometre.

An Unexpected Star of the Show

The lions were remarkable. But the animal everyone kept talking about afterwards wasn't a lion. It was a baby elephant. Only a few days old. Its tiny trunk moved in every possible direction except the one it intended. It looked confused by its own existence.

And it was absolutely adorable. Sometimes nature's biggest wow moments don't come from predators. They come from innocence.

Breakfast With a King

The next morning delivered one of those classic safari moments that will stay with us forever. The lions had made a kill overnight. When we arrived, the lionesses were feeding in the bushes. Then we looked to our left. A huge male lion was sitting only a short distance from our jeep. Completely relaxed. Completely in control. The undisputed king of the bush.

For a few minutes, everyone fell silent. There wasn't much left to say. More Than Wildlife

Of course we came for the animals. But looking back, we remember far more than wildlife. We remember:

  • laughing about being trapped behind a rhino on the road

  • watching an oversized baboon patrol the lodge like he owned the place

  • the British teenager who dropped her phone near feeding lions

  • the warmth of the lodge after a freezing game drive

  • sharing excitement every time somebody spotted an animal first

That's what family adventures are really made of.

The stories between the highlights.

Why We Chose Welgevonden Instead of Kruger

Many visitors automatically choose Kruger National Park. We deliberately looked elsewhere.

What appealed to us about Welgevonden

āœ… Fewer vehicles at sightings

āœ… Smaller and more personal lodges

āœ… Excellent chances of seeing the Big Five

āœ… No self-driving traffic jams

āœ… A more exclusive safari atmosphere

For families looking for quality over quantity, Welgevonden felt like an excellent choice.

Our Tips for Families

Stay At Least Two Nights

The magic of safari builds over time. The longer you stay, the more relaxed and rewarding the experience becomes.

Pack For Cold Mornings

Even in Africa, early morning game drives can be surprisingly cold. We experienced temperatures of just a few degrees Celsius. Layers, gloves and a warm jacket make a huge difference.

Wildlife Doesn't Follow Schedules

Some game drives will be extraordinary. Others may feel quiet. That's normal.

The unpredictability is what makes wildlife encounters so special when they happen.

Don't Focus Only on the Big Five

Yes, seeing lions is incredible. But some of our favourite memories involved a baby elephant, curious giraffes and even a rather grumpy baboon.

What We'll Remember Most

Before arriving at Tintswalo, we hoped to see lions.

We did. Twice. But years from now, we probably won't remember the exact number of lions, giraffes or rhinos we saw. We'll remember sitting together in the bush. We'll remember laughing as a rhino blocked the road.

We'll remember a newborn elephant discovering how its trunk worked. And we'll remember the feeling that, for a brief moment, the rest of the world had disappeared. That's the kind of wonder we're always looking for. And Tintswalo delivered it in abundance.
