Why Hautes-Gorges Became Our Perfect Introduction to Canada's Wilderness

Our first hike in Canada wasn't the most famous, the highest, or the most challenging. But it was the moment we truly realized just how vast this country is.

The Promise of Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie

Our Canadian adventure was only just beginning. After months of planning, we finally found ourselves in Québec, ready to explore the landscapes we had dreamt about from across the Atlantic. For our first real outdoor experience, we chose Parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie, one of Québec's most spectacular national parks. The promise was simple:

Deep valleys.

Towering cliffs.

Endless forests.

And our first taste of Canadian wilderness.

Exactly what we had come for. First Impressions: Rain, Wind and Jet Lag

Jet lag had other plans for our morning. By 6 a.m., the entire family was awake, thanks to the seven-hour time difference. Instead of fighting it, we embraced it. Pancakes. Coffee. A slow breakfast.

Outside, conditions looked far less encouraging. Rain had fallen throughout the night and strong winds were still sweeping through the region. Still, we weren't about to let that stop us. After stocking up on groceries, we made our way to the park entrance and prepared for our first Canadian hike.

The Turning Point

We chose the Le Riverain Trail, a 10-kilometre route following the Rivière Malbaie through the valley. The first kilometres were beautiful but familiar. Forest. River.

More forest. Then came the climb. And suddenly, everything changed. The trees opened up. The valley appeared. And for the first time, we truly understood the scale of Canada.

The Wonder Moment

We stood high above the Rivière Malbaie.

Below us, the river wound through an endless sea of forest. Towering cliffs rose from every side. The wind howled around us. We felt tiny. And somehow, that was exactly what made the moment so special. Canada's wilderness wasn't asking to impress us.

It simply existed on its own scale. We were just lucky enough to be there.

Why This Hike Stood Out

Our First Real Taste of Canadian Wilderness

Before arriving in Québec, Canada mostly existed in our imagination. We had seen photos. Watched documentaries. Read guidebooks. But none of those prepared us for the sheer scale of the landscape. The forests seemed endless. The valleys felt enormous. Everything appeared bigger than we had expected. This hike was our first real introduction to that feeling.

The Perfect Balance of Effort and Reward

Le Riverain is not an extreme hike. Most families with active teenagers can comfortably complete it. Yet the viewpoint rewards you with scenery that feels far grander than the effort required to reach it. Those are often our favourite hikes. Not because they're easy. But because they leave enough energy to enjoy the experience.

Unexpectedly Great Timing

One thing we quickly learned about Canada? The toilets seem to appear exactly when they're needed most. Twice during the hike, official facilities appeared just moments after we had started discussing alternative plans.

Coincidence? Probably.

Impressive timing? Absolutely.

More Than Just a Hike

Looking back, this day wasn't really about the viewpoint. It wasn't even about the trail itself. It was about crossing an invisible threshold. Until then, Canada had been an idea.

A destination. A country on a map. That day, it became real. The forests. The mountains. The wilderness. The feeling of space. For the first time, we truly understood what people mean when they talk about the grandeur of Canada.

Our Tips for Families

Start Early if You're Dealing with Jet Lag

If you're coming from Europe, your body clock will probably wake you up long before sunrise. Use it to your advantage and enjoy a quieter start to the day.

Dress for Changing Conditions

Weather in Québec can change quickly. We experienced rain, sunshine and strong winds within the same day.

Bring a Picnic

One of the joys of hiking in Canada is finding a picnic table surrounded by nature and taking your time.

Don't Underestimate the Wind

Our biggest challenge wasn't the distance or the elevation. It was the wind at the viewpoints.

Take Time to Look Around

The beauty of Hautes-Gorges is not found only at the end of the trail. It's everywhere along the way.
